To Bean Or Not To Bean

Cloud Atlas at night

Think of Chicago and a certain number of things are bound cross your mind: deep dish pizzaWrigley field and… “The Bean.” However, this bean no ordinary bean. It’s a breathtaking 33 by 66 by 42 feet masterpiece envisioned by sculptor Anish Kapoor. The highly polished exterior is made up of 168 stainless steel plates welded together and highly polished to show no visible seams.

Ever since being finished in 2006, the Chicago Bean has been a landmark for tourists and locals alike. It bends the Chicago skyline and turns your face into something you’d see in a fun house. However, what most people don’t realize is this bean is actually a cloud. Cloud Gate is the official name of the sculpture designed by Kapoor and is supposed to represent liquid mercury.

The seamless design of Cloud Gate was important in Kapoor’s vision because he wanted it to seem “ready-made.” You can find Cloud Gate in Millennium Park to see it for yourself.
