Every tour is a unique experience in the making and each has its own story to tell. The question is, how do you tell it?
Whether it is the excitement around going on your first educational tour, a successful fundraiser or even a class project that ties into what your students will learn on tour, taking these stories to your local paper is a great way to share it with your community!
On top of that, it is a great way to get your students excited as well as generate interest in future educational travel opportunities for students and parents who are not participating this year.
Get started with these simple steps:
1) Identify which local newspapers you would like to target.
After finding the paper, identify the best reporter or editor to talk to about your story.
To find the right person, just scroll to the bottom of your newspaper’s homepage and look for the “contact us” option.
Here is where you can normally find a list of media contacts at the newspaper. The ideal contact would be the education reporter. If there is no specific education contact, email the editor instead. If you can’t find any contacts on the newspaper’s website, feel free to call the main line and ask whoever answers who the best person is to receive story ideas.
2) Craft your story.
Use this template to craft the message you want about your story idea.
3) Get your pitch out the door.
Copy your message into the body of an email and address it to the most appropriate contact you found. The best time to email reporters with story ideas is between 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
4) Give the reporter one full business day to respond.
Reporters are very busy too, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t hear back from them. If this is the case, consider calling them once during the same times listed above to check if they received your email see if they are interested in working together to publish your story.
That’s it! Now you’re set to officially pitch your story!
